A Guard Dog
Guard dogs, even the smallest ones, scare away burglars and intruders instantly. They are always protective of their owners and family. Any kind of noise will make them bark and scare away anyone trying to gain access to your compound at night. Train your guard dogs to be mindful of prowlers by teaching them
to sit by the door step and watch out for any unusual activities. A well trained dog knows the scents of its owners and the family; any kind of unusual scent will set him off instantly.
Set up a Neighborhood Night Watch
Consult your neighbors and set up a neighborhood night watch. This is a support group whereby all members in the community assist each other by looking after each other’s homes. These groups are particularly great for residential areas where there is a high prevalence of crime or a large population of elderly people. An intruder cannot escape easily if more than one person is keeping an eye on him. As a matter of fact, most intruders/burglars forgo areas that have neighborhood watch. Just take turns with your neighbors so that every evening, there is someone people keeping any eye on the homes. More importantly, ensure that everyone in the neighborhood is aware of the plan.
Though alarm systems are quite expensive, they are very effective in protecting your home from burglars at night. They cost between $500 and $1000 or more, hence may be out of reach for some families. Nonetheless, you can find some cheaper versions which do not necessarily alarm a security company that you have intruders in your home, but will at least alert you and your family. Go for those alarm systems which have loud and continuous noises. These types scare away burglars easily.
These locks are available at reasonable prices. A locksmith will install this safety feature for you and give you all the security codes. Electronic locks make it practically impossible for anyone who does not have these codes to gain access into the house.
Lastly, we sometimes compromise the security of homes at night by making a few simple mistakes. Below are some more simple tips to secure your house at night and improve the safety of your family and possessions:
- Lock your cars and keep them in the garage at night. Also, the garage door opener should be kept out of site.
- Store all your tools (hammers, pliers, shears, and screw drivers) inside the house. A burglar might actually use them to break into your house.
- Close all curtains or blinds during the night, to keep your valuable items out of sight.
- Switch on your outdoor lighting system at night. This will deter trespassers from walking around in your compound.
